Bjorka’s Actions Get Wilder, Check Effective Ways to Prevent Corporate Data Leaks

Aksi Bjorka Kian Menggila, Cek Cara Jitu Mencegah Kebocoran Data Perusahaan

The data breach case revealed by the anonymous account Bjorka on an online forum (breached.to) is not the only cybersecurity threat facing Indonesia. If examined further, similar cases keep recurring every year, requiring serious efforts to find ways to prevent corporate data leaks.

From January to September 2022, there were seven major personal data leak cases recorded. Quoting Tempo, these included more than 52 thousand Bank Indonesia documents, patient data from hospitals in Indonesia, job applicant data at PT Pertamina Training and Consulting, financial report data of 21 thousand Indonesian companies, data of 17 million PLN customers, data of 26 million IndiHome users, and 752 GB of Jasa Marga customer data.

This series of cases shows weak systems guarding corporate IT security. So the question is: how to effectively prevent corporate data leakage? Read the full explanation below.

Data Breach Case by Bjorka Hacker

kasus kebocoran data hacker bjorka

The hacker using the anonymous account Bjorka shocked social media with actions revealing data breaches in Indonesia. Through the site breached.to, Bjorka claimed to possess 1.3 billion prepaid SIM card registration records belonging to Indonesian mobile customers.

Not only that, Bjorka also claimed to hold 105 million population data from the General Election Commission (KPU). Quoting Tempo, in these two data breach cases the Nomor Induk Kependudukan (NIK — Indonesian ID Number) was always present.

Unbelievably, Bjorka even shared two million sample records out of the 105 million population dataset for free to netizens to prove the authenticity of the data. Bjorka’s name became a hot topic again when he mocked the Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo), leaked confidential documents of President Joko Widodo, and hacked MyPertamina data. Bjorka’s actions attracted both praise and criticism — some lauded him while many believed his actions harmed society.

How to Prevent Data Leaks in a Company?

It is undeniable that data leakage can happen to anyone and any company. Below are several accurate ways to prevent corporate data leaks.

Data Classification

The amount of data owned by a company is certainly large and will continue to increase, but not all data needs special treatment. Therefore, companies need to perform data classification to determine what should be protected to facilitate data security strategy formation.

Protect Devices Used

In the hybrid work era, employees use various work devices (both company-owned and personal) with minimal protection and operate outside the corporate network. Therefore, companies need to implement security solutions for devices that access applications and software supporting work, such as email, web security, network security, and endpoint security.

Protect Cloud Data

Using the cloud to store business data offers flexibility and ease. Therefore, businesses must provide protection to prevent corporate data leaks.

Give SOC Team Access to Intelligence

The SOC (Security Operations Center) team must have access to the latest threat intelligence so they can stay updated on new tools, techniques, and tactics being developed and used by cybercriminals.

Implement EDR Solutions

EDR (Endpoint Detection and Response) solutions are an anticipatory effort to prevent data leaks starting from endpoint-level detection, investigation, and timely incident remediation.

Enhance Security Systems

Security enhancement efforts are carried out to prevent data misuse caused by data leaks. Companies can implement a series of security solutions to prevent the loss of sensitive data from being exposed to unauthorized parties.

Cybersecurity Training for Employees

In some cases, data leaks occur due to internal human error. To anticipate this, companies can provide cybersecurity training to employees, such as forbidding opening or storing files from unknown emails or websites that may endanger company systems.

Prevent Data Leaks with EasiShare Ready Integration Solution

To prevent corporate data leakage, you can implement the EasiShare Ready Integration solution. Not only as file sharing, EasiShare also offers a simple file management interface that can integrate with analytics, encryption, and antivirus features to ensure your business is safe from various data leakage threats.

EasiShare offers solutions through encryption, CDR (Content Detection and Response), and antivirus to ensure no data leak actions occur. Folder encryption prevents system administrators or unauthorized parties from opening or accessing stored files.

Meanwhile, CDR will cleanse files before they are uploaded to EasiShare — generally stripping harmful scripts or fraudulent code from Microsoft Office documents and reconstructing them cleanly. Then the antivirus will scan all uploaded files using the latest updates. This technology works by scanning malicious files into a quarantine area so they cannot enter EasiShare.

To ensure there is no data leak, EasiShare comes with a high-availability, multi-tenant ready architecture and has been proven to provide data security for 30+ companies in Singapore. The EasiShare solution is also flexible to implement in on-premise, cloud, and hybrid environments.

In addition, EasiShare stands out with seamless authentication integration via Active Directory (AD) so there is no need to migrate from existing storage. This capability allows integration with third-party vendors already used by customers.

To provide security, EasiShare also offers remote wipe and homing wipe devices through two recycle bin stages so that accidentally deleted data can be recovered. Encryption uses 256-bit AES algorithms both in transit and at rest.

As a preventive measure, the antivirus feature scans every uploaded file using the latest antivirus version. The signature DB technology moves potentially infected files into quarantine so they cannot enter the EasiShare system.
